WELCOME TO WALKABOUT AUSTRALIA

40,000 YEARS OF PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

Since 1988 a group of over 30 Aboriginal men and women artists have been designing and painting our unique Walkabout products here in Alice Springs. Here are the founding artists at
our xmas party in 1988 and many still paint today.

The textures, colours, materials in the Walkabout range are a combination of the
"worlds oldest living culture combined with the majestic beauty and power of our outback desert region here in the heart of Australia, Alice Springs.

WALKABOUT STILL THE MARKET LEADER

In 2003 walkabout will celebrate its 15th birthday by revitalizing its product range so that it will remain the market leader in authentic aboriginal products. Over the years many companies have tried to copy our innovative ceramics and clothing by getting factories in asia and major australia capitals to copy and produce inferior mass reproductions.

BUT WALKABOUT SURVIVES BECAUSE WE STILL DO PRODUCE

BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON WALKABOUT

Established 1988 by Simone Lienert
New owners Margaret Healy/Colleen Byrnes

BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON ABORIGINAL CULTURE

For 40,000 years, Australian Aboriginals have virtually remained isolated from the rest of the world. Aboriginal culture is recognized as the world’s oldest continuous living cultures
Australian Aboriginals were hunters and gatherers and their religious traditions place the origin of each tribal group or clan in its own land. Aboriginal culture is not locked away in a dusty museum but is alive today and presented in new mediums available through
WALKABOUT.

DREAMTIME

Central to Aboriginal religious beliefs are the ancestral creative beings who shaped the land
and created the plants, reptiles, insects, fishes, birds and the people.
These ancestral creative beings journeyed across the continent in the Dreamtime; they emerged from the subterranean or heavenly world and moved over the featureless earth.
They created the billabongs, rivers, the rock hills and the mountains, and all the features of the environment. At the same time, the ancestral creative beings placed in this setting all of live, human, animal and plant, in an interconnected system of relationships.
This done, they retired to the sea, underground or to the heavens, although they have never really abandoned their creations.

ABORIGINAL CULTURAL PERFORMANCE

Their creative forces are still active in the land and may be summoned and revitalized through the performance of a cycle of rituals called ‘Corroborees" to enlighten the energy of the ancestors.
There are about 250 tribal groups holding as many clans and languages
that are still spoken in many places.

ABORIGINAL ART

Art was a very important part of their religious life, to maintain traditional representations and styles. It is still in the tradition to represent many of the desert Dreamings stories, and the sand paintings have been replaced by paintings on canvas and new styles like dot paintings and X rays styles are the most popular modern art styles based on traditional Dreamings and totemic representations.

ABORIGINAL AUSTRALIA BEYOND 2000

Today, throughout the country, many Aboriginal communities are living on the land that has been given back to them by the government.

There are about 300 000 thousands Aboriginal people in Australia that represents less than 2 % of the entire Australian population. Over 30 Aboriginal men and women make up the Walkabout team
